At Hungerford, we understand that music is a unique form of communication that can influence the way pupils feel, think and act, and enables personal expression. The teaching of music can aid in developing pupils’ ability to appreciate a variety of music and make judgements about musical quality. It encourages active involvement in different forms of music making, both individually and in groups, developing a sense of group identity.
Our music curriculum, with a scheme of work for each year group from Pre-school to Y6, meets the requirements of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (Expressive Arts), The National Curriculum for Music and the suggested approaches of the Model Music Curriculum (Singing, Listening, Composing, Performance/Instrumental Performance). Music lessons are supported by the Sing Up Music Programme, which ensures we cover a broad and diverse range of repertoire, approaches and music traditions, connecting the interrelated strands of singing, playing, improvising, composing, listening and appraising.
We offer instruments lessons provided by Rocksteady Music School which gives the opportunity for children to learn to play their favourite songs in their very own band with a choice of drums, keyboards, electric guitar, bass guitar or vocals. As well as learning new musical skills, lessons also boost children’s confidence, wellbeing, social skills and teamwork. Lessons take place every week during school time.
