Everyday Essentials
At the beginning of each day, children in Year 4 should come into school through Entrance D. At the end of the day, 4GG will leave through Door D, while 4MS will leave through Door E. This will help to ease congestion and make dismissal a little smoother for everyone.
Please remember that children should bring their reading book and reading record every day, along with a named water bottle. Children should also wear their full school uniform each day. Thank you for your support in these matters!
PE and Outdoor Education
In the Autumn Term, Year 4 PE days will be Monday and Wednesday. Children should wear their school PE kit on these days. Please ensure that earrings are removed before school; if they cannot be removed, they will need to be taped over. Long hair should also be tied back.
In the Spring Term, Year 4 children will begin swimming on Thursday afternoons at Crewe Lifestyle Centre. Children should bring their swimming kit, including shorts or a swimsuit, a towel and goggles. Long hair must be tied back. As children will walk to and from the swimming pool, they must always bring a waterproof coat.
Your child’s teacher will let you know when it is their turn for Outdoor Education. On these days, children should wear suitable outdoor clothing that can get muddy, with plenty of layers as needed and, where possible, wellington boots. Please ensure children are dressed appropriately for the weather so they can enjoy their outdoor learning comfortably.
What we do and when
In Year 4, children are taught Reading, English and Maths every day. Lessons are taught in carefully planned units, with learning building from one lesson to the next. Children are introduced to new concepts and then given opportunities to develop, practise and deepen their understanding as the unit progresses.
In the afternoons, children enjoy a broad range of foundation subjects, including History, Geography, RE, Art, Design Technology, French, Science, Music, Computing and PSHE, alongside our weekly PE sessions. Where possible, we use a thematic approach to our learning, making meaningful links between subjects and connecting as many lessons as possible to our termly topic. This helps children to make connections in their learning and see how different areas of the curriculum work together.
Y4 Multiplication Check
Every Year 4 child across the country takes part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) at the beginning of June. This academic year, the check window will open on Monday 7th June. The check consists of 25 questions, with children given 6 seconds to answer each question, meaning it should take no longer than around 5 minutes to complete. The purpose of the MTC is to check that children can fluently recall their times tables up to 12 × 12. Developing this fluency is an important foundation for future learning in mathematics, supporting children as they move on to more advanced concepts such as fractions and algebra.
Children will have plenty of opportunities to practise their times tables in school, but we would really appreciate parents’ support with practising at home too. All children have a Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) account, which can be accessed away from school. We find that little and often works best — just 5 minutes a couple of times a week can make a real difference! If you have any difficulties accessing TTRS, please speak to your child’s class teacher and we will do our best to help. Alternatively, we can arrange for paper practice sheets to be sent home where necessary.
