What We do

Each day in Reception is a busy one and although we have a daily timetable to create routine and help the children settle in to their first year at school, we provide an exciting range of activities so that no two days are exactly the same!  We want to help the children becoming confident learners who don’t give up when things get tricky. We aim for them to be happy to leave familiar grown-ups and to come into school excited about what the day might entail.

We undertake daily Phonics, English and Maths lessons. For our phonics we follow the ‘Read Write Inc’ scheme. This is continued as the children move in to Key Stage 1 in order to build on what has been learned in their reception year. The children are then able to consolidate and continue to apply these key skills. More information about what is covered and how this learning is organised can be found here:

We also spend time outdoors and have a weekly PE session all geared towards building up strong core muscles that will help children be able to sit and develop shoulder strength for writing. We work hard on developing fine motor skills so that they can hold a pencil with control and are developing pre writing skills. Each week as part of our English we have a session to focus on these skills with the children following instructions to complete a guided drawing based on our story that week.

We plan our learning based on the children’s interests, which form the basis of any topics studied.

Our daily English sessions focus on early reading and writing skills as well as helping to foster a love of books and stories. We also believe effective communication skills are a vital part of learning to read and write and follow the ‘Pathways to writing’ approach which allows the children to build prewriting skills alongside phonics to work towards independently writing a sentence.

Our maths sessions focus on establishing a good understanding of numbers following NCETM Mastering Number programme, the children work progressively on the skills of subitising, cardinality, ordinality and counting, composition and comparison.  The children are then encouraged to use these mathematical skills in their play.  As well as numbers, vocabulary and understanding of other mathematical concepts such as measurement, time, shape and pattern are also developed through hands on learning opportunities and taught explicitly each week.

Our Long term curriculum overview lays out what themes through quality texts we aim to cover over the year.

We want you to share in your child’s learning journey at Hungerford Primary Academy and would like you to enjoy the Tapestry Journals.  It is important that you can access your child’s journal to be able to do this, we are happy to help if you are having any issues logging on. Please contact your class teacher if you are unsure of your log in details.

We would also ask that any photographs / special moments from life at home are uploaded to Tapestry by parents where possible, the teaching staff really enjoy seeing these and it helps us get to know each child as an individual that bit more.

Children need to have a clearly labelled water bottle in school every day so they can drink regularly.

In an attempt to promote good oral hygiene we request that children bring water instead of juice.

A snack of fresh fruit and a carton of milk is available every morning break for children up to the age of five. A hot school meal or a sandwich lunch bag (known in school as a Cat Bag) is available as part of the Universal Free School Meals programme. Please provide a packed lunch for your child if s/he would prefer not to have a school dinner.

Children need reading books in school every day. Reading books should be brought in school book bags and will be stored in classroom trays.

Children are required to wear their PE kit into school for PE which will be on a Thursday. This consists of a white T-shirt, black shorts and school pumps. A pair of wellies should also be brought into school for Outdoor Education work, we will notify you when it is your child’s turn.
