We believe that PE, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, helps children to develop a sense of well-being, a greater understanding of a healthy lifestyle, and strengthen feelings of self- confidence. We also believe that it teaches children, through experience, to know about and value the benefit of physical activity whilst at school and throughout life.  PE lessons should cater for individual abilities and group skills in a progressive programme. The skills we focus on to help children develop through Physical Education include:  agility, balance, co-ordination, strength, stamina, skilfulness, spatial awareness and a desire to perform to their best abilities.

The aims of the Hungerford Physical Education curriculum are:
  • For all children to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • That all children can be and are physically active for a sustained period of time.
  • For children to engage in competitive sports
  • To equip children with the skills necessary to lead healthy and responsible lives as individuals and as active members of society
To deliver active and engaging lessons in and out of the classroom.
  • To provide holistic cross-curricular P.E. lessons so our children develop a love for learning whilst also becoming healthier, happier and more productive, both in and out of the classroom.
  • To promote children’s self- esteem and emotional well-being
  • To help children understand form and maintain, healthy, worthwhile and satisfying relationships based on respect for themselves and for others
Teaching and learning of Physical Education begins in the Foundation Stage through the basis of play and discovery using fine and gross motor skills, under the Physical Development sections of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, Development Matters 0-5.
Every child, regardless of ability, experience and background will be supported to be successful within this area of learning. Those children identified as requiring extra assistance are afforded opportunities through extra time spent with staff members.
Each child, from EYFS to Year Six are given the opportunity to participate in 120 minutes of high quality, progressive Physical Education/ Physical Activity each week, with hall space and outside areas available at allotted times, as well as this, we provide all children with extracurricular clubs during or after school time should the children wish to participate. The children are encouraged to try new things, work hard, concentrate, push themselves, understand others and not give up.
Physical Education lessons aim to encourage the children to become confident and successful learners and to improve their team working skills, and apply these skills inside the classroom in other areas of the curriculum. All children are encouraged to be actively involved in these sessions and any children with physical challenges are supported to achieve their own goals.
We monitor both the delivery and coverage of the curriculum to ensure that all children have equal access. We attend to, and acknowledge, differences positively. Our belief in individualised, differentiated teaching pays regard to gender, culture, ethnicity, children who speak additional languages and those who required specialist needs. Resources are chosen and monitored in relation not only to quality, but also to the positive representation of gender and cultural differences.
More able and talented children are also identified by their class teacher; these children are therefore planned for appropriately by the class teacher and are offered many opportunities for deeper levels of learning.
As a result of the teaching and learning of Physical Education at Hungerford, children will have developed:
  • A secure knowledge of Physical education skills that are processed into the long-term memory.
  • The knowledge of how to live a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • The ability to be Physically Active for long periods of time.
  • The competence and confidence to excel in a wide range of activities.
  • The ability to swim confidently over 25 metres, tread water for 30 seconds (and signal for help), float on their back for 60 seconds, enter and exit the water safely.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Experience in competitive sports and games.
  • Flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance.
  • Skills in running, jumping, throwing and catching.

Health and Safety

The safety of children is the responsibility of the class teacher. The class teacher will carry out a risk assessment of all equipment and apparatus that children are expected to use prior to beginning the unit. Resources used have clear guidance on how to be used effectively and safely whilst all children will be closely monitored when using this equipment. However, the children are encouraged to take their own safety and the safety of other children into consideration whilst participating in P.E. lessons or clubs.

Children are required to wear suitable clothing for P.E. and teaching staff should wear comfortable clothing and shoes when teaching P.E. The school policy is that children should be in full kit, with no jewellery, have hair tied and wearing appropriate footwear whilst participating in any physical activity.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our school provides a range of lunch time and after school P.E. related activities, including High 5 netball, football, athletics, tag rugby, dance, running and many more. These clubs further encourage children to develop their skills and develop teamwork and cooperation. We enter many KS1 and KS2 competitions to provide the children with opportunities for healthy competition and to practise skills they have learnt during P.E. sessions.
